"Formed 2 November 1971, due to the enthusiasm and endeavours of a small band of people headed by Ray Bell and Alan Pomfrey who felt that there was a large pool of potential footballers in the Tawa-Linden area whose needs were not being catered for.The elected committee immediately got down to business and with the support of wives and well-wishers set about fund raising and ordering gear for the 8-12 junior teams expected in the first season. However, it was not long before the number of teams to be fielded exceeded all estimates and the club eventually fielded 22 junior and two senior teams.Junior football was reasonably successful during the first season while the senior 1st side finished a commendable 2nd in Division 3.
June 1973 was a Special General Meeting convened to discuss the proposal to introduce Women’s Football into the club. This was approved and the decision confirmed at the 2nd A.G.M. held September 1973.
The 1973 season saw the club with 4 senior teams, with the 3rd D Division team winning its league and entry into Division 2. Junior football had also begun to make great strides.
By the 1974 season the senior playing strength reached six teams, including a team from Porirua Hospital and one from Tawa Cricket Club. The senior Division 2 team won promotion to Division 1 after only one season in the grade. A word of praise must go to coach Ray Hill and Manager Ken Wylde for their efforts. Junior football saw the 7th grade Saints, coached by Jim Cabrey promoted to the Regional League and the 5th grade Rangers, coached by Bill Smith were the first team to win a Mana A grade championship. Tawa Devils and Tawa Strikers won and were 1st respectively in their grades.
Last season, 1975, saw the club have its best season to date. In senior football:
Wellington Division 1 finished 3rd
Wellington Division 4 finished 2nd
Wellington Division 6 finished 1st (also runners-up in the K.O. Cup.)
Junior Football:
Tawa Devils won 7th A grade, Tawa Cedars won 9th A grade and Tawa Falcons won 7th B grade, while Rangers, Rovers and United finished runners up in their respective competitions, In addition Devils and Cedars finished runners-up in the Waterside Cup. Devils capping off an excellent season, won promotion to the Regional League.
The ladies’ team, while not winning any competitions proved keen and enthusiastic players. The recently held five-a-side tournament held in conjunction with the Wellington Town Hall promotion saw the club perform with distinction. The senior competition being won together with two junior sides becoming runners-up in their grades in the competition, a great effort.
The playing sides have been well supported over the seasons by keen, hardworking committees and we look forward to the 1976 season for further enjoyment in playing pleasure in watching and satisfaction in aiding the growth of Association Football in New Zealand."
